Maternities: Dorothea Tanning's Aesthetics of Touch

This essay explores the concern in Dorothea Tanning's work of late 1960s and early 1970s with touch, contiguity, concept maternity. In addition to a series paintings drawings that connote intimacy whose titles allude maternity, during this period Tanning also gave form group soft sculptures, which similarly evince preoccupation closeness indicate challenges limits individual subject. engagement these themes, argues, resonates closely feminist poetics developed around same time by poststructuralist theorists such as Hélène Cixous, Julia Kristeva, Luce Irigaray.
